Overview of Bright Futures Scholarships
The Florida Bright Futures Scholarships is one of the most coveted publicly funded educational grants in the state of Florida. It is offered to high school seniors who display academic excellence and are planning to continue higher education objectives upon graduation. A merit-based scholarship, this program is not only awarded to young achievers, but as well as to high schools students who have demonstrated involvement and participation in various community service activities within the State.
There are three different awards under the Florida Bright Futures Scholarships; the Florida Academic Scholars, the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars award and lastly the Florida Medallion Scholars Award. All three awards are dependent on the students’ activeness in community welfare and development, as well as high standards of academic achievement during their high school years. Keep in mind that the Bright futures scholarship awards are lottery based.
Bright Futures Scholarship Eligibility
- Student applicants must be residents of the State of Florida and must be an U.S citizen or an eligible permanent resident of the United States.
- No default of any kind on any federal loan.
- Students who are interested in applying for the Florida Academic Scholars Award should have a 3.5 weighted GPA in their high school senior year. Additionally they should have taken up 16 college preparatory credits in English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Science and Foreign Language. They should also have rendered 75 hours of community service approved by the district or private high school in which they are studying and at least 1270 SAT score.
- Those who wish to apply for the Florida Medallion Scholars Award meanwhile should have at least 3.0 GPA in their high school senior year, and have completed 15 college preparatory credits. They should have garnered at least 970 in the SAT’s, or maintain a 2.75 GPA for each renewal year.
Recipients of a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship may renew their grants by maintaining the aforementioned GPA’s during their succeeding baccalaureate years.
How to Apply
The application process starts with submitting a Student Financial Aid application. All applicants are required to fill this out. Do take particular care when filling out your application form since any error on the form could very well disqualify your financial aid application. Application for the Bright futures scholarships must be done when the student is in their last year of high school, post December 1st and well before graduation. There are also hard copies available at the office of the Department of Education.
Scholarship Application Deadline
The deadline of application of forms and requirements is during the last month of the school year. Application period meanwhile begins every December 1st. It is always recommended to apply early even though the award itself is lottery based.
