  • Michigan Competitive Scholarship

    Overview of the Michigan Competitive Scholarship

    The Michigan Competitive Scholarship is a program designed to provide financial assistance to undergraduate college students to pursue their degrees at any approved Michigan college institution. This program is based on both financial need and academic achievement, thus students are required to take up standard tests in order to qualify for the said award.

    This scholarship award is limited to tuition and mandatory college fees. Award monies are based on the availability of funds each year. While recipients of the scholarship may renew for each succeeding academic year, the scholarship eligibility ends as they graduate from college.

    Eligibility

    To qualify for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, applicants should:

    • Have a qualifying score on the ACT examinations before entering college
    • Possess a high school diploma upon graduation or GED certificate
    • Display financial need
    • Enroll at an approved post-secondary college or university in Michigan
    • Be a legal resident in the State of Michigan for at least one year
    • Be a US citizen
    • Have no criminal record
    • Possess a minimum of 2.0 GPA for renewal purposes

    How to Apply

    Interested parties must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via the www.fafsa.ed.gov. Forms are also available in the office of financial aid in high schools and colleges. In order to renew the scholarship, students should file for FAFSA renewal each academic year.

  • Paul Tsongas Scholarship Program

    Overview

    The Paul Tsongas Scholarship Program is an effort established by the State of Massachusetts to recognize the achievements of students who have graduated from high school who have acquired outstanding academic achievement. Through this scholarship, substantial amount of grant money is provided to selected students in order to help pay off their college needs.

    This scholarship is based on merit and academic achievement. While financial need is not a major consideration, applicants may provide additional records of financial necessity in order to be prioritized.

    Eligibility

    Students who wish to apply for the Paul Tsongas Scholarship Program should be graduating high school seniors who have been accepted to any Massachusetts State College or University. They should also possess the following requirements:

    • A grade point average of at least 3.75 upon graduation
    • SAT score of at least 1200 or ACT equivalent
    • Fully enrolled in a state college in Massachusetts.
    • Fulfillment of the eligibility criteria established by the State College and approved by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education
    • Permanent residency in the state of Massachusetts
    • US citizenship
    • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Laws
    • No past criminal record

    How to Apply

    To apply for the Paul Tsongas Scholarship Program, interested parties may inquire at the state college in which they are accepted to, as each institution has its own set of specific requirements which they have to provide in order to be qualified for the grant.

    Each state college may award the scholarship to five recipients each academic year, and these can be renewed each year until the time the recipient receives a baccalaureate degree.

    Scholarship Application Deadline

    The deadline for submission of requirements for the Paul Tsongas Scholarship Program is on April 10 of each year. Criteria for selection may be viewed at the College and Career Centers of participating Massachusetts high schools.

  • Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program

    Overview

    The Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program is a project developed by the State of Maryland to help recognize the potential and fund the education of children of members of the United States Armed Forces who either have died in the line of duty or those who suffered permanent disability due to military service.

    This scholarship offers up to $19,000 per year to each of the recipients for the upcoming academic year. The scholarship money can be used to offset tuition needs as well as other related education expenses. The money awarded is based on the students’ financial need and background qualifications.

    Eligibility

    In order to qualify for the Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program, applicants one or many of the following criteria

    • The applicant must be the child of a United States Armed forces member who died while on duty or who suffered total (100%) permanent disability while discharging his duty.
    • The applicant must be a United States Armed Forces Veteran who is suffering from service related disability of 25% or greater and is no longer eligible for “federal veterans” educational benefit.
    • The applicant must be a Vietnam War POW.
    • The applicant be be either the sons or daughters of POW/MIA of the Vietnam War
    • The applicant must be the son or daughter or spouse who has not re-married of victims of the 9/11, 2001 terrorist attacks who died as a direct response to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Virginia Pentagon Attacks or the United Airlines Flight #93 crash.
    • The applicant must be the son or daughter or surviving spouse of the Maryland State or Local safety employees who have died in the line of duty or who have been 100% permanently disabled while in the line of duty.

    Required Documentation

    The following documentation must be submitted along with the application. Failure to submit these documents will mean that your application will not be considered. The documents below depend on the section or eligibility criteria under which you are applying for the scholarship

    • Completed application for the 2011-2012 academic year. Ensure that you completely fill out all the required sections.
    • Copy of your birth certificate showing names of both parents if you are the son or daughter of a deceased or 100 percent disabled military person,
    • POW/MIA of the Vietnam Conflict, deceased public safety employee or volunteer, or deceased victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Copies may be obtained from the State Department of Vital Records.
    • Copy of your marriage certificate (if spouse of deceased public safety employee or volunteer or of deceased victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks).
    • Copy of death certificate.
    • Verification that you are 25 percent disabled from a service connected disability as a result of military service and have exhausted or are no longer eligible for federal veterans’ educational benefits.
    • Verification that death as a result of military service, or that death or 100 percent disability was in the line of duty for a public safety employee or volunteer.
    • Verification that 100 percent disability was from a service connected disability as a result of military service.

    How to Apply

    To apply for the Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program, applicants must submit a completely-filled up application form which can be downloaded from the program website, transcript of records, and other institution-specific requirements based on the college or university they are accepted to or currently enrolled in.

    Scholarship Application Deadline

    The deadline for submission of entries is on July 15 of each year. Application requirements can be submitted at the education institution’s financial aid office.

  • Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship

    Overview

    The Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship is an educational program developed by the Kansas Board of Regents to help provide financial assistance to academically competitive students who come from certain ethnic/racial backgrounds such as that of African Americans, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Hispanics. It is dedicated primarily to currently enrolled or incoming college freshmen, although upper-classmen can also apply.

    The scholarship provides up to $1,850 per recipient. The final amount awarded to a student is dependent on the student’s financial need. The financial need of an applicant is based on the information that the applicant fills out when submitting their FAFSA. This information from the applicants FAFSA records along with the availability of State funds determines the final award amount that is disbursed to a qualified applicant. Recipients of the Kansas Ethnic Minority scholarship can reapply for the scholarship each academic year for four to five years until they graduate.

    Eligibility

    To qualify for the Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship, applicants should be US citizens and residents of the State of Kansas for at least one year prior to application. Applicants must be enrolled in a community college, college or university in the State of Kansas.

    In addition, the applicant must also satisfy the following conditions

    • Selection by National Merit Corporation in any category
    • Completion of Kansas Scholars Curriculum
    • Applicant must have a minimum ACT score of 21 or
    • Applicant must have a minimum SAT score of 990
    • Their cumulative GPA during school must be 3.0 or above.
    • Applicant must rank in the upper 33% in high school.
    • Chosen as a Hispanic Scholar by the college board

    How to Apply

    To apply for the Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship, students can download forms from the State of Kansas Student Aid Application. They can email the completely filled-up form, together with their transcript of records, FAFSA records, recommendation letters from the school or college faculty familiar of their academic achievement, as well as other institution-specific requirements.

  • Louisiana Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP)

    LEAP Overview

    The Louisiana Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) is a scholarship program endorsed by the Federal Government to help academically qualified students who can demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is managed by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance. The office of Student Financial Assistance allocates funds to public and private colleges and universities in the State of Louisiana so that they can accommodate students who are deemed deserving of financial assistance.

    Up to 4,000 students are awarded of LEAP scholarship funds each year, which total of up to $1.5 million. Grant monies awarded to each student vary on the student’s financial need, coursework and academic achievement during the semester on which he or she has been accepted.

    LEAP Eligibility

    In order to qualify for the Louisiana LEAP scholarship, applicants must be US citizens and at the same time, residents of Louisiana for at least one year. They should have been registered with Selective Service, and annually submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or Renewal of FAFSA.

    In terms of academic qualifications, applicants should possess at least 2.0 GPA or a minimum of 45 points on the General Education Development test. They should be certified by the school to be recipients of a LEAP Award, and meet other qualifications set by the institution in which they are enrolled.

    Student applicants must as well have good moral standing, have substantial financial need of at least $199, and comply with the terms of other student aid programs administered by LASFAC.

    How to Apply

    To apply for the Louisiana LEAP scholarship, students must submit a completely filled-up application form, transcript of records, Student Aid Report, letters of recommendation from high school or college administration officials knowledgeable of their performance in both academic and community service activities, and other institution-specific requirements.

  • Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship

    Legislative Memorial Scholarship Overview

    The Maine Legislature in an effort to recognize and reward the potential of one student from each Maine county in terms of academic achievement created the Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship Fund.  The scholarship is available for by high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in any post secondary institution within the State of Maine as well as by currently enrolled college students. Graduate students are also welcome to apply for the scholarship. Both part time as well as full time students are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

    The amount of scholarship provided each year is $16,000. This amount is to be distributed to 16 recipients at $1,000 per student. The money given by the scholarship can be used to offset the costs of tuition and other related college education expenses.

    This scholarship is based on financial need as well as academic achievement. Permanent residence in the State of Maine is also mandatory as part of the selection process. We have more on the eligibility below

    Eligibility

    All interested student applicants for the Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship must satisfy the following conditions

    • Applicants must be residents of Maine
    • Applicants must already be in a two or four year course or be accepted into one. Further, the college or school must be accredited by the New England Association and must be in Maine.

    Among the consideration of the Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship include:

    • Outstanding academic achievement-applicants should provide a GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Activeness and involvement in community development programs
    • Financial need based on the applicant’s Student Aid Report

    How to Apply

    Applicants can download forms from the Maine Educational Services foundation website. The application forms must be completely filled up and sent together with the student aid report, complete transcript of records and a 300 word essay explaining their educational goals.

    Recommendation letters from the following are also required:

    • Some one who is tuned into the applicants academic progress as well as their extra curricular activities. Ideally some one at their high school or college will be best suited.
    • Some one with direct knowledge about the applicant’s contribution and involvement in service dedicated to the local community.

    Deadline to Apply

    All application forms and its supplemental documentation must be handed over on or before April 15 of each year. Recipients of the scholarship will receive the money after having completed the first semester of the incoming academic year.

  • Gregory W. Giles Memorial Scholarship

    Gregory W. Giles Memorial Scholarship Overview

    The Gregory W. Giles Memorial Scholarship is an educational grant provided to students who are aiming for college education and at the same time suffering from epilepsy. It is established by the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho in memory of Gregory W. Giles, a young man who suffered and died of epilepsy at the age of 19.

    This scholarship grant offers up to $1,000 to one recipient each academic year, and the grant money can be used to pay for tuition, miscellaneous, books, and other related college education needs.

    Scholarship Eligibility

    To qualify for the Gregory W. Giles Memorial Scholarship, you should satisfy the following conditions.

    • Applicants should be citizens of the United States
    • Applicants must be residents of the State or Idaho
    • Applicants must be able to demonstrate medical diagnosis of epilepsy for the minimum of one year.
    • Applicants must be graduating from high school and have definite plans to pursue college education or should be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution within the state.

    Applicants who are already pursuing academic or vocational coursework should be enrolled full-time or a minimum of 12 units in a 2-year or 4-year degree.

    How to Apply

    When applying for the Gregory W. Giles Memorial Scholarship, applicants should submit:

    • A completely filled up application form (You can download this from www.EpilepsyIdaho.org)
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • Physician statement
    • You are also required to submit a typewritten letter of application that must answer in detail the following list of questions
      • Describe yourself and your interests. A brief description of yourself will go a long way in helping to understand you.
      • Detail the types of seizures, the frequency and also the medications you are currently on or prescribed.
      • Explain briefly how you feel about epilepsy, what are the challenges you’ve faced and how you’ve dealt with these challenges.
      • Career Goals – Explain your career goals and the reasons you chose those particular goals
      • College Education Funding – How were you planning on financing your education? What prior planning and effort have you put in to finance your education?

  • New York HESC Veterans Tuition Awards

    Veterans Tuition Awards Overview

    The New York HESC Veterans Tuition Awards (VTA) is a scholarship program established to help eligible veterans pay for their costs of education to an undergraduate or graduate degree in any approved post secondary institution or vocational school in the State of New York.

    This scholarship is funded by the New York State each year, and is intended to pay for the costs of college education, such as tuition, books and other matriculation expenses. Award packages for the year 2011-2012 at $4,895.10 or 98% of the recipient’s tuition, whichever is less.

    This is a need-based grant, thus applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need in order to qualify for the scholarship.

    Eligibility

    To qualify for the New York VTAs, applicants must qualify under one of the following conditions

    • Must be a United States armed forces veteran post February 28, 1961 who have received any one of the following
      • Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal
      • Navy Expeditionary Medal
      • Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
    • Must be a Persian Gulf War Veteran post 08/02/1990
    • Must be a U.S Armed forces veteran who served in Indochina between 12/22/1961 till the end of the Vietnam conflict around May 1975
    • Must be a U.S Armed forces veteran who served in Afghanistan post 9/11/, a date infamous for the twin tower attacks in 2001

    Aside from the basic veterans’ requirements, applicants must also possess:

    • US citizenship
    • A high school diploma or GED
    • HESC eligibility
    • Residency in the State of New York
    • Must be currently enrolled to either a full time or part time degree course. The degree can be either a graduate or an undergraduate degree. The education institute can be any New York State institution or vocational training school
    • Must be able to demonstrate a record of having a good standing academically
    • Be charged a minimum of $200 in tuition fees for each academic year

    How to Apply

    To apply for the scholarship, students should fill up the FAFSA. You can fill out the FAFSA either online or by acquiring the FAFSA forms in the respective college or training school. Veterans who have not filed a FAFSA may complete and submit a payment application for the scholarship grant at the HESC office.

    They should also comply with specific requirements provided by their respective institutions. Those studying in vocational training schools would only have to complete the Veterans Tuition Award Supplement.

  • Iowa Scholarship For The Arts

    Scholarship Overview

    The Iowa Scholarship for the Arts is a private scholarship funded by the Iowa Arts Council intended for the development of graduating high school students who wish to pursue careers in visual and performing arts.

    The scholarship is given by the organization each academic year, and amount to $1,000 per recipient. The grant money can be used to offset various college education costs such as tuition, books, and miscellaneous expenses.

    Eligibility Criteria for the Iowa Scholarship for the Arts

    Students who wish to apply for the Iowa Scholarship for the Arts must be high school seniors who are residents of the State of Iowa. They should have already been accepted to an arts program in a college or university located in Iowa.. Applicants should also provide outstanding artistic abilities in any of the following fields:

    • Music
    • Visual Arts
    • Literature
    • Dance
    • Theater
    • Folk and/or Traditional Arts

    Children of the Iowa Arts Council board or staff are not eligible for the scholarship.

    How to Apply

    To apply for the Iowa Scholarship for the Arts, students should fill up an application form which can be downloaded from the organization’s website (http://www.iowaartscouncil.org). Aside from the completely-filled up form, applicants must also provide a one-page essay on why they should be accepted for the scholarship. Two letters of recommendation from their high school faculty or accredit arts group or organization should also be submitted, together with a portfolio of their artistic abilities.

    Aspiring writers must provide 3 copies of Artistic Achievement Literature Sample.

    Performing artists must provide 3 copies of Artistic Achievement CD or DVD.

    Visual artists meanwhile can email their Artistic Achievement PowerPoint presentation together with their other requirements.

    Finalists will be called for an interview screening with a panel of judges from the Iowa Arts Council Board. Winners of the scholarship will be announced via email.

    Scholarship Application Deadline

    The deadline for submission of application requirements is on every March 8th of each year, at 4:30 PM. Incomplete application requirements as well as illegible, handwritten applications will not be reviewed.

    Scholarship Overview

    The Illinois General Assembly Legislative Scholarships is a project endorsed by Illinois state law in order to help students residing in the state to pursue their dreams through college education. Each member of the Illinois General Assembly is given the opportunity to nominate 2 individuals from his or her district to receive a scholarship grant in any 2-year or 4-year coursework in any college or university within the state.

    Scholarship Eligibility

    Applicants for the scholarship program should be residents of the district designated to the legislator who had them nominated. They should also be high school seniors or currently enrolled college students studying in the aforementioned institutions.

    Residency is important in this type of scholarship; the Illinois State Board of Education checks student residency via the Illinois State Board of Elections legislative locator directory. Scholarships will not be provided to recipients whose residences are in conflict with the Board of Elections directory.

    How to Apply to the General Assembly Scholarship

    To apply for the Illinois General Assembly Legislative Scholarships, interested parties may acquire forms from the awarding legislator. They should also request for a nomination form from their awarding legislator, and a waiver of confidentiality form that is available only from the awarding legislator’s office. Form should be completely filled by the recipient and have it notarized before submission.

    No forms are available at the Board of Education office.
